Last night on late night TV I started watching a movie I never saw or heard of before but it was great on so many levels. I missed the beggining so don't know who wrote it and the only actor I knew, was Charlton Heston, he only had a bit part though. It was called 'In the Mouth of Maddness'. Looked like a Steven King type thing but more brillant then he could ever be. Coincidentally the premise was, what I'm studying in my philosophy class right now -- How do we know what is real? This movie is very thought provoking. I should go chk it out at the IMDB, C ya, nlm

I recently saw Memento. What a great film! It's an absolute head fuck.

At the top of my list would be "Mindwalk".
Another good one for a realistic voyage into the Dark Ages-Inquisition and the struggle between intellect/subjectiveness is "The Name of a Rose".
For a comedy of the absurd, throw in a all time favorite of mine...."Being There". Might as well throw in Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life"!

"Life of Brian" is still the best comedy ever made.
Still haven't gotten around to seeing it, I have high expectations. It's been recomended to me many times. Perhaps it will be on PBS some day soon.
Get the original from the video store. PBS'll edit it to death.

You mean RENT it? I don't rent movies, or that is I don't PAY to rent anything. I wonder if movies are more expensive to buy in video stores? I only occassionaly buy them at Costco when the price it right and it's something I really, really want. It's getting more difficult to find movies on tape, for some reason. Costco seems to be thinning out their supply. You really think PBS cuts the films? But they show them without commericals! Most of the ones I watch and that they've been showing lately are the older B&W's so I don't know if they've been cut or not.

Just curious..... what does that mean, ''absolute head fuck''. I guess because you said it's a great film, it means you liked it. Sounds like a strange way to say it though.

Snake, I certainly did like it, but head fuck actually means that it take a lot of thought and keeps switching from one solution to anoth. For example, The Usual Suspects was a 'head fuck' because of its progression to the resolution. Memento makes that story line look like a bad (as if there was a good) Schwarzenegger film. You really do have to think hard when you watch it, but it is fantastic.

I think practically everyone is going DVD. I do know that Blockbuster recently tossed 30% of it's video stock to make room for more DVD's.

I think any major network'd edit them. At least, for any swearing and/or nudity in the movie. Don't know for sure, I haven't seen it myself. I, however, have seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail in the theater. I was ROTFLMAO even during the opening credits!

PBS has shown Monty Python uncut before. I can't believe you haven't seen it James. It is far cleverer than the Holy Grail. Some of the points they make in the movie are spot on. It's hard to even come up with a favorite part of the movie it moves so fast and is so incredibly intelligent yet incredibly funny at the same time.
I have another couple of recommendations:
Our Man in Havanna with David Niven and Ernie Kovacs
The Loved One
Both of those are classics.

Thank you very much for explaining. Those are the kind of movies I like too. Now I will appreciate your posts much more..... well, the movie ones anyway. I bet you like Hitchcock.

Another reason I don't see contempory movies is I'm afraid they will play 'music' or (let's be honest here) rap crap and I will have to walk out. Is Momento a current movie? You are making me want to see it, with such high praise you are giving it. Let me know if you see it listed to be on TV. Thanks

Yes to 'contemporary' (theatrical release earlier this year I think...just came out to video release recently). The soundtrack is very unobstrusive, and I don't recall any rap.
Doubt it will be on TV anytime soon...and will probably be eviscerated beyond recognition when/if it does come to commercial TV...but if you have a premium cable channel, you should check there.

Ah nuts! Well, guess I won't have a chance to see it, sorry. I don't have cable and in about a year I won't have any TV. The place I'm moving to, as I understand has poor reception so I won't even get the networks. Life must go on though. If within the next several months if I haven't seen it, maybe you can give me a scene by scene account. Thank you.

Serious/thought provoking: "Pressure Point" w/Sidney Poitier and Bobby Darrin "The Life of Emile Zola" w/Paul Muni Significant satire: "Surf Nazis Must Die" "Cecil B. Demented" w/Melanie Griffith,Mink Stole,Kevin Nealon, and second generation Waters regulars Could be considered both categories: "Natural Born Killers" w/Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis Bizarre sci-fi: "Pi"

Just saw "Vanilla Sky" and thought it was great. I give it a 8 out of 10, but I am not surprised that many people and critics seem to dislike it. As one critic puts it, "The audience has to do a good amount of 'heavy lifting'. In other words you actually have to use your brain to think about what is going on and try and figure out the symbolisim and such. For me it was refreshing to see a film that required some cranium exercise.
One of the only negatives was the movie was a bit long. 2 1/2 hours.
