Hello fellow critical thinkers,

I hope I've posted this in an appropriate folder.

I need your help. Recently on the impressive Showtime series, "Penn and Teller's Bullshit," it was alleged that recycling is a waste of time and energy, that it pollutes, and that it doesn't affect our landfill capacity as we've got enough for a thousand years. It said that only aluminum recycling makes environmental and financial sense.

On the community boards there, two persuasive articles were posted. One, from the New York times several years ago and another from "The Center for Free Market Environmentalism," a name which raises my eyebrows immediately as the free market had nothing to do with the progress made by, for instance, the Clean Air and Water acts.

So, now I don't know if I should continue recycling or not (I know for a fact that, here in California, 80% of what we recycle ends up in landfill anyway). The environment and its health is very important to me even though I know that environmentalist organizations are just as guilty of pushing pseudoscience as those who worship the free market (I deeply respect market forces, but I think they have to be balanced on occasion).

So, if you're interested and/or have the time to read the articles, I'd appreciate any feedback from the formidable minds here.
