quote: NEWBURGH, N.Y. - John Kerry (news - web sites) said he would put Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) on trial in U.S. courts rather than an international tribunal to ensure the "fastest, surest route" to a murder conviction if the terrorist mastermind is captured while he is president.
Are you kidding me?! Fastest and surest way to a conviction? in our courts? It will take forever to convict him in US courts. Especially after a team of high profile lawyers and 5 years he will look like a cub scout. I really would not like him in this country anyway. I think a military tribunal is best. What do you think? Assuming we do not kill him before the trial.

I'd not count that chicken 'till it's in the skillet. We don't got him, yet.
And, it has yet to be shown that he's survived Tora Bora. I am of the tentitive opinion that he did not due mainly to his already iffy health.
I think that the thing to do is to try him here (assuming). It doubtless would turn into a nauseous comedy, with strutting lawyers and posturing polititions, but here is where his crimes were commited, and the trial would give the families a little closure.
The result of course, would be a foregone conclusion.

So what if it takes a long time? I have no problem with a fair trial to show the world we have some honor left. What do you think? Are you thinking he'll get off on some technicality and skip town. Put down the crack pipe and let American justice prevail!
If fair trials aren't your thing...move to China!

Why put words in my mouth? Senator Kerry said it would be the fastest way to convict him, I disagree. A tribunal would be faster. I said nothing about not having an ufair trial. A tribunal can be fair and honorable.
It sounds like you are saying if I do not agree with your ideas I should leave the country. I cannot speak chinese and I have never smoked crack. I think I will stay here. |

I myself, would prefer a public trial, jury, tedious jawbone, and all. That's the proper, American way to do it.

IIRC, Al Quaeda has carried out homicidal attacks in countries besides the USA. It might not be likely, but if the Kenyans were to get their hands on OBL they'd be perfectly within their rights to put him on trial there- most extradition treaties contain language to the effect that if both parties want the same guy and one of them catches him first, it's finders keepers- he needn't be extradited until all the charges against him in the first country have been resolved. |

Putting the word "fair" on an American trial causes me to slightly chuckle. Of all my experience I have yet to see a fair American trial, however, the contrast between fair and unfair is more prevalent here than in other countries (say, China?). A tribunal may be more efficient, but it would not be the American way! |
