Don't know how many people here have seen this Snopes write-up, or even the emails which prompted it, but I just wanted to point it out not only for the humor aspects, but also for the wonderful illustration of the best of what the Mikkelsons do. They don't just tell you the story is false. They don't just tell you why the story is false. They tell you all about the folkloric motivations which probably went into authoring the story in the first place.

Great stuff.

No doubt about it.

Hmmm...Maybe Atheist should take the 4-1 holiday and fool theists as the theme?

Let's see if I can remember how it goes. "Fool me...once...shame...on...you..., we won't be fooled again." Right?

I have issues with the term Holiday=Holy day, and is unacceptable for and Atheist occasion.

Yes-- one of my favorite Bush quotes! The guy shouldn't talk unless a teleprompter is in front of him. (Or a radio transmitter is taped to his back )

"Wer mit Ungeheuern kämpft, mag zusehen, dass er nicht dabei zum Ungeheuer wird. Und wenn du lange in einen Abgrund blickst, blickt der Abgrund auch in dich hinein." --F. Nietzsche, Jenseits von Gut und Böse (Aphorism 146)

Oh, did he learn how to read?

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

What would be the point? The churches already do that every day of the year!

The foundation of morality is to . . . give up pretending to believe that for which there is no evidence, and repeating unintelligible propositions about things beyond the possibliities of knowledge.

That's one of the best things about being an atheist: we don't need some lame excuse to take a holiday.

"What luck for rulers that men do not think." -- Adolf Hitler (1889 - 1945)

Jefferson rejoiced. In his autobiography, he noted that the effort to curtail the bill's reach had failed "by a great majority, in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mahometan, the Hindoo, the infidel of every denomination.

I still enjoy Christmas, though. Great food, great movies on tv, great excuse to get people to buy things for you... Easter I don't care much about, though.

Christmas is the biggest Capitalism holiday of the year. It is extremely fitting as a USA holiday. I love Christmas. Recreational shopping is so therapuetic.

PS, this is not meant to be sarcastic. I do have some over-consumers' guilt as far as the rest of the world is concerned, though I mostly shop at second hand sources. Sorry, guess evolution has pressured me to be self centered a tad more than group centered. But only a tad, mind you.

Easter is growing more capitalistic all the time. I recreationally shop on Easter as well. Very satisfying.

Well, April 1 is okay, I guess, but if atheists are going to get a holiday, I vote for Halloween. You get to dress up, decorate, get good things to eat without cooking, and the fundies already hate it.

Halloween has all the fun of Christmas with none of the hassle, hypocrisy or stress. It's far and away my favorite holiday.

I am really against any holiday. It just seems too... Christian for an atheist.

I got it! God is Dead Day! You can celebrate any or all days if you wish. But calling it a holiday is punishable by death.
