Eric Rudolph, the man who recently plead guilty to a series of bombings, including the one at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, has finally offered a motive for his heinous crimes. I was able to guess it before I even read the story. Can you?

I am waiting to see if Rudolph rolls over on those who helped him along the way, if he hasn't already.

Here in the Tarheel, his beliefs are well known.

I wonder--seriously--how many fundie nutters secretly, privately, almost kinda agree with him.

A lot of them! They'd send him money, if they thought they could do it without wrecking their public image.

Yeah, it's scary to me....irrational. They justify all kinds of anti-social behaviors towards their perceived enemies through the twisted writings in bileble (just a-pickin' an'a choosin' whichever scriptures suits their fancy). And then they feel completely justified afterwards as if they're doing gawd's work. What a fucking delusional world they live in.

Stories like this makes it hard for me to maintain my belief that the death penalty is barbaric. Noone has the right to take a life without that individual's consent. Though I feel that this is a case where the government could make an exception, I realize that once such a precident is set there are more exceptions waiting around the corner. Life sentence without the chance of parole is good enough for me.

I don't really follow you here, Dr. Mabuse.
Does an idealistic murderer deserve the death penalty more than an sociopath (If this is the case here, Rudolph might very well be a sociopath.) killing for pleasure?

A sort of mixture of both, I think, and not all that uncommon. Many people use their faith as an excuse when they commit these sorts of acts. Unfortunatly, those sociopaths like Randall Terry, who encourage people like Rudolph, can't be locked up with him.

Just found this over at Buzzflash: a statment by Rudolph:
quote:
On the Olympic Park bombing, which killed one person and wounded 111:

``For many years I thought long and hard on these issues and then in 1996 I decided to act. In the summer of 1996, the world converged upon Atlanta for the Olympic Games. Under the protection and auspices of the regime in Washington millions of people came to celebrate the ideals of global socialism. Multinational corporations spent billions of dollars, and Washington organized an army of security to protect these best of all games. Even thought (sic) the conception and purpose of the so-called Olympic movement is to promote the values of global socialism, as perfectly expressed in the song ``Imagine'' by John Lennon, which was the theme of the 1996 Games even though the purpose of the Olympics is to promote these despicable ideals, the purpose of the attack on July 27th was to confound, anger and embarrass the Washington government in the eyes of the world for its abominable sanctioning of abortion on demand.''

The whole thing is a chilling read. Marion, IL would be a good place to lock-down this asshole.

Anyone know what sort of environment he faces within the prison population itself? I mean, you know how even convicted killers abhor, say, pedaphiles, who often need extra security protection during they stay in prison due to the potential for violent retribution.

How do you think Rudolf is perceived by the other inmates? After 911, will he be regarded as simply another terrorist who has killed innocent women and children? Or will they look at him as a force of righteousness, a folk hero who stood up to a corrupt government?

As filthy pointed out, there have already been many people who aided this lunatic while he was a fugitive. Are those people are minority? Or are they representative of something larger and much more sinister?
