The hypocratcy makes me glad that I'm an atheist. It seems that sainthood for John Paul might be right around the corner.

OME, April 12 - The cardinals electing a successor to Pope John Paul II are facing unusual popular pressure to declare him a saint, with some cardinals responding through deft messages, press leaks and internal lobbying. The canonization campaign may even be playing a role in the succession politics.

Calls for sainthood began almost immediately after the pope died on April 2 and reached a peak at his funeral on Friday, when mourners in St. Peter's Square held banners saying, "Santo Subito," or "Saint at Once," and chanted, "Santo, Santo." Reports of miraculous cures through his intervention poured in.

Several Italian newspapers reported that the Vatican had quietly been collecting messages from people attesting to healings attributed to him.

And yet, Fr. Damien is little more than an historical footnote.

You have to admit that there is some pretty exceptional evidence.
The pope met people who later felt better.

Indeed. But so did Father Damien, and neither ever miraculously cured anyone of anything. But of the people feeling better, which had the least and needed comfort the most? Which priest showed the greater dedication and courage? Which became a martyr to his compassion and devotion, knowing from the beginning that it would probably be his fate?

Needless to say, I am a great admirer of Fr. Damien.

But, that's politics, no less scummy in the churchs than anywhere else, and perhaps a bit more so. I predict that an excuse will be found to elevate John Paul before the year is done.

Apparently, most Catholic web sites don't list their saints by date. The best I can find is http://www.catholic-forum.com/saints/year2003.htmthis site[url] which lists all the activity (beatification, canonization, etc) by year. Unfortunately, it stops at the year 2003. I don't know if anybody has been canonized this year or last year, but apparently 12 people were canonized (declared to be saints by the Catholic Church) in 2003.

Sorry I don't have any links for you, but from what I hear Pope John Paul II declared more people saints in his lifetime than all the previous popes before him combined. Seems he thought the old process was too slow and so did much to grease the rails to direct sainthood. If one were cynical, one could speculate that he did so knowing that the possibility was high that he might later enjoy the title of saint.

I recall reading that as well. I could be wrong and probably am, But wasn't the last person he sainted Pope John XXIII? Don't know what Johnny might have done, or alledged to have done, to deserve it, though.

There is also the rumor floating around that John, whose tenure as Pope was only a few months, was murdered.
