Well, I used the first bit in a sort of way you would when doing even or odd parody. I use 7 bits of actual information, the first bit just tells you how you're supposed to decode that information.
Another hour later, and I'm still stumped, even with the spoilers (it doesn't help that each digit is one binary digit, but not one-for-one - seems self-contradictory). Whatever the function is, I'm not seeing enough of a pattern to grasp it. More encoded text might help. Might not.

But, I would like to point out that parity bits are used for error detection, not to change the decoding method. For example, with even parity, the total number of 1 bits between the data bits and parity bit should be even if the symbol was transmitted correctly (so a space with its single 1 bit would get an even-parity bit of 1, whereas an A, with two 1 bits, would get an even-parity bit of 0).

I understand that it isn't exacty using it like a parody bit, but sort of like one. That is, when a parody bit is 0 or 1, it tells you whether there is an error or not. When mine is 0 or 1, it tells you whether the following composite numbers represent 0's or 1's. It was more a comparison for lack of better words.

The function can't be one to one, as you have a possibility of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 going to 0 and 1. That means that at the very least, 4 of them must go to the same number (either 0 or 1), which of course means it can't be one to one. And in this specific case, when the parody bit is 0, 4, 6, 8, and 9 all go to 0 while 2, 3, 5, and 7 go to 1.

Hindsight, I should have left that off. I just though using primes and composites to represent 0's and 1's would have been too easy.

No, the primes were the problem. I tried odd-vs.-even, high-vs.-low, and a couple other splits of the eight digits in use, but was looking at a possible 2,080 different combinations, all of which needed to be tried three different ways (at least). I could have done some automated testing, but there was little guarantee that it would have helped. Had I thought of primes, I might have realized there were only four single-digit primes, but I didn't stumble across it.

Anyway...

Regarding the Voyagers, I can't believe why anyone would get the idea to cut the funding so early. What was it, $4 million per year? NASA is supposed to return to the moon and go on to Mars and beyond and I'm all for that, but not at the expense of other projects. I see the defense budget for 2006 was approved, and it's almost half a trillion dollars. Fantastic. The space budget barely reaches above $17 billion if I remember correctly. I'm not just going after USA here, I think the entire world could survive perfectly fine without massive amounts of weapons, huge armies and ICBM's aimed at ourselves.

NASA and other space agencies such as ESA are too underfunded and almost crushed under their own bureaucracies. How are they supposed to get anything done that way? Maybe they should go and look back at the 60's and see what made them so successful.

I think it was just plain old pure competition. Well, that, and the support of the American public.

Edit:

Dave, I'm setting myself a time limit on this one. I have until 10pm on Wednesday. (which was arbitrarily chosen, of course)

Dave, I just need you to tell me I'm on the right track at all:

320 = 3+2+0 = 5 = 100000 (5 0's after a 1)
5 = 10000
20480 = 2+0+4+8+0 = 14 = 1+4 = 5 = 100000

It seems that there has to be multiple representations of the space character. These one's I have picked out only because there number of occurances, but it is quite weird that they all add up to 5, which could mean 5 0's, which is of course 32 in binary.

But that only gives me this:

XXX XX XXXXXXXX XX XXXXXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXX XXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXX XXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXX XXXXXXXXX XX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XX XXXXXXXXX XXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

So I'm thinking there must be some more.

Edit:

Nevermind the above. Turns out there are at least 20 numbers with this pattern. Shit!

Crap, Ricky. Nevermind any of it. You just made me realize that all those numbers are off by one bit. And the code I used to create the thing is at work, so I can't post the correct stuff until tomorrow morning, earliest. Sorry.

Use this page to convert from binary ascii code to regular text. For Dave and Ricky's first few messages all that you have to do is copy and paste the code into the binary box and hit decode.

Dave, if your response to dv82matt is in plain hexidecimal, I think you may have messed up.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.
