Uh, yeah, I think I would have noticed such a pedestrian mistake. Obviously, the numbers are "plain hexadecial" (just like the numbers in my last puzzle for you were "plain decimal"), but they don't encode plain ASCII (though I will offer a hint and say that I did use a standardized encoding method).

Ricky:
I agree completely. I also find codes facinating, although I seldom have the patience to crack them.

Dave:
I have been unable to find a standardized encoding method which puts the alphabet within the range you used and I'm to lazy to work it out for myself using the trial and error method.

I have often attempted and occasionaly solved cryptogram puzzles in which spaces and punctuation are not encoded. If you were to give me those characters I would be more tempted to give it the old college try.

dv82matt, the encoding I used is over 100 years old (so you won't need any computer programs to decode it). I could probably have standardized it even more by translating my message into French before encoding it.

Okay, Ricky, the correct numbers should be:

15476736 2752759 157184 384 12912455 1835403 3072 242796 225473 1604352 29040 1814592 197066 12814144 5539808 1572864 12845112 15597954 12582912 13430784 1313222 2034176 123329 13107576 6512128 1572864 14683032 6322570 6 14417922 14966808 3072 14880768 527416 1248771 209856 48 6484352 13464096 384 29057 13738432 2650438 16036226 1015878 97600 3072 1602048 1572864 13012480 1316806 233502 1842344 14778694 12583015 4589111 14779780 1573088 3072 1804440 2194628 15663144 12582912 14876701 15753216 1835904 199640 6 6491688 19974 790583 1854064 5865984 90488 2341888 1572864 12710944 212488 14418434 2101144 5533710 3837442 262598 15224880 293190 196608 6488440 364198 1572864 1859608 15532960 6 12066306 2344834 196820 12582912 48 71 10493574 6 8880128 384 12059194 868160 8621064 1836928 24576 14680481 738872 384 1147342 166014 3072 6295432 14876736 230768 788871 2035716 6292408 68935 12582912 12714968 14704707 12594792 236677 16252929 4426952 6292023 983296 48 31283 1576704 1573313 12813864 196608 164895 12611585 1671480 6 5946881 28161 5505143 24576 36358 12812304 14781472 990720 196608 10498488 8404055 24576 225292 12618424 3072 12873728 12582912 196631 71479 5779516 11504704 1376375 6291844 48 498 11276742 14683480 384 5007992 31811 196608 4139520 1802244 12718330 2119559 8415168 3614 779808 72728 2033192 12582912 14823430 10030792 354363 1836337 1572864 13400576 2624743 6 12611616 1818688 8142960 48 220675 15350792 384 14680456 8390075 164759 4391803 1859609 4197941 24576 1835568 2295 790278 384 6377030 90143 24576 3829891 14968640 1519104 48 6315536 14824840 12062780 1572879 14495752 2100766 5701639 1572864 2329920 2035741 1574849 10718336 8396336 230296 10497928 1058688 3072 233472 5509000 48 6524032 2231511 197693 1572864 1802472 10223664 14686080 1862280 14684211 24576 2031617 1836960 856126 10315272 1564800 8585735 102277 1277958 14705187 1744400 24576 527808 16351296 33254 7348615 8134705 48 5779457 1317911 16296 3944837 1593792 1732616 786872 4458368 1060912 2582912 245768 32982 29084 2033856 196608 2034368 14683140 3673600 8389879 13632023 24576 2257222 3273090 1999411 12582912 12059075 3780128 1572864 467396 25119 16265280 10513920 196608 16386624 2952455 4143616 15206918 1572864 8454584 10490110 1671224 2126003 2099142 126721 264176 1814548 789880 12914216 3072 15469573 8325200 12582912 13795784 16357378 14856584 1575447 48 1016192 3633 1622467 4210144 6 14685608 1605831 1966467 527391 6840352 48 8652344 3637664 48 458808 2221504 8389560 12824736 13111747 1572864 1079 15204741 15138816 2294240 8417438 196608 9178296 6750264 14778928 6291910 1642543 384 1564675 14696496 57375 3072 12593275 3257 2097342 200711 11067399 3910144 2252807 12722719 6373431 28686 942136 48 229765 4055045 31510 12585303 26823 1609408 3072 231966 16360192 6 97376 1835123 1850432 24903 24576 4201351 16838 33264 4424006 1342464 9961475 1572864 4098432 1078478 818056 6 1588992 10226752 232771 13398021 1849728 16285720 24576 2322771 1835396 1084976 14683456 1314240 1815040 12648901 9973761 2297512 12722375 7224 12814848 12611624 123399 4197941 10116

Alright Dave, I give. Tell me how many characters are in your message and I'll see if I can get it then.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

I was afriad of that. I've already spent a good 2 hours trying to figure out what it would be assuming that were true, but alas, I came up empty handed.

So what is it? I'm fairly certain it isn't anything to do with summing the digits in each number. I know the numbers don't repesent how many 0's or 1's are in front or back of them. It can't be a high/low, prime/composite, or any function like that because "6" would make no sense.

Hell, I've even tried all this stuff backwards, and then tried it as if each number was backwards, but the order of the numbers was correct.

The largest problem I'm having is trying to figure out how both a single digit such as 6, and an entire number such as 14685608, both can mean a single character.

Ahhh screw it, just tell me the answer.

Here is part of the answer: each 24-bit number should be broken down into 8, 3-bit wide fields.

If that doesn't help a whole lot, let me know and I'll tell you the rest.

Oh sonuvabitch, I think I got it.

Edit:

Ok, maybe not. So I got the first number to be 7, 3, 0, 2, 6, 0, 0, 0 and the second to be 1, 2, 4, 0, 0, 3, 6, 7, and so on, but I can't seem to find a function that would translate this into binary. It isn't prime/composite (didn't think it would be anyways..), high/low, odd/even.

It is some sort of mathimatical rule, correct?

Obviously it was a sundial. So ok, my code sucked. I felt left out. My only hope was that you would assume it was hard and discard the obvious. Bah. My reliance upon other people's carelessness never works out the way I plan.

To be honest, I did discard the obvious at first, until nothing else I tried in the first 60 seconds made any sense.

Yeah, I keep waiting for the day my paycheck shows up with a blank space where the amount usually is. Bastards always fill it in, though.
