Oh yeah. that'll make us look good!

quote:
From the link in the articleThis project was partly to have fun on campus before finals, but also proclaim that we find religious text to be smut. To set pornography and religious texts as equal forms of smut. It was also a fund raiser to gain religious material in the name of our group (since this is our groups first semester, we didn't have any reference material). We didn't want this to be blown out of proportion into a Bibles for Porn, but religious scripture for porn. This includes the Qur'an, Torah, etc. Our original flyer might explain this better.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

I never saw the first Bible/Porn swap meet here in Austin, but read of it on the Knighthood of Buh website. It was linked to the Austin Atheist Community message board. Some feel the need to shake it up a bit with some slanted humor.

Oh yeah. that'll make us look good!

It's actually a pretty intelligent stunt. If someone reads anything by the students that did it, it becomes obvious that this wasn't about simply being crass and offending people. They wanted to challenge basic assumptions that religious scripture is a good basis for morality, and to provoke discussion. It seems they achieved that with many people. And as far as the people who just react with anger and storm off without at least trying to understand the real point, there's no hope for them anyway.

Discussion is a good thing, and I don't care what anyone calls the Bible (smut, nonsense, superstition, whatever). The problem I have is that giving out pornography will not make peoples lives any better. We have a huge problem with sexual addiction in this country, peoples lives are destroyed when they get addicted to pornography. Trust in relationships are broken, women are viewed in a negative way, families are destroyed etc. It is very irresposible for them to be giving out pornography.

I'm not a fan of religion, yet I'm not sure that exchange stunt accomplishes anything except to aggravate some people. To the point, I don't understand what you mean by "sexual addiction"... I'm of the impression that sexuality is an innate biological trait. I could understand a suggestion that infidelity destroys relationships, and that there's "too much" of that in our culture, maybe... but how pornography relates to all of this (if it does at all) is unclear, nor is it clear to me what basis you would have to believe such a thing. If a guy/gal has been divorced 3 times because they mess-around on their spouses all of the time would suggest maybe a bad attitude or a psychological problem to me, or otherwise put, perhaps a certain lack of regard for others, including spouses... but a sexual addiction??? I don't get it.

I happen to agree. I believe that all of the objectionable verses in the bible should be removed prior to any further printings.

If you Google: "addicted to pornography", you'll find that pornography addiction appears to be pretty much exclusively a Christian concept. Just to make sure it isn't affecting you, you might want to check yourself in for some counseling, Robb.

All kidding aside, you'll have to do a lot better than guessing. Some quick research into the matter of pornography addiction shows that a lot of "spiritual saviors" claim it to be pervasive. There are a few counselors out there, people who make money by supporting the notion that pornography addiction is a huge problem. But real research with real statistics seems to be pretty scant. I get the idea that pornography addiction is primarily a buzz phrase used by those who deem themselves morally superior and think it their place to judge others' morals. Your turn, dig up some numbers, Robb. Just exactly how damaging is it?

It does make one wonder if our Robb is the Rob being interviewed for this article...
quote:
Men Against Pornography...

Are there a lot of porno addicts?

One is too many. The porno industry on the web is big, there's a lot of bizarre fantasy feeding themselves on the net. We [Men Against Pornography (MAP), an organization that believes that pornography is an ill and that it should be banned] estimate that there's a 70% addiction rate of pornography in America.

[...]

Why do you think that men need porn?

Men don't need porn. Porn is everywhere, so it's easy to have a porno addiction. When you start looking for porno, you can get hooked very easily. There is too much pornography for a person who thinks that it's normal.

And the Internet? Knowing that almost 75% of its content is porno!

Like I said before, it's very sad.

Can you give us examples of a very bad case of porno addiction?

I've met people with compulsive masturbation addiction. They had to masturbate every half-hour and they get to a point of bleeding. Some men have lost wives, kids and homes because they watched and bought porno all the time. Others have raped women or begin having sex with prostitutes to fulfill their fantasies.
So, there's a 70% addiction rate of pornography in America, eh? And here's a fellow who claims that sexual addiction is "one of the most prevalent causes of relapse for alcoholics and chemical dependents." Of course he's in the business of (read: makes money at) counseling people who he has deemed to have this problem. He also doesn't cite any research or sources. Looks like another moral superior who feels it his place to pass judgment on others. Naughty, naughty!
quote:
Sexual Compulsivity: The Secret Addiction...

Question:
Is sexual compulsivity really an addiction and, if so, how is it similar to other addictions? What is different?
Answer:
Jim, I tired quickly of the current disagreement among professionals about whether something exists in sexual behavior that we can call an addiction. Whatever we label it, this is a greatly under-reported issue. I believe that sexual dysfunction of many forms is one of the most prevalent causes of relapse for alcoholics and chemical dependents. It is clear that there are many people who suffer from an obsessive thought process and pattern of compulsive sexual behavior that seriously damages them and others, a pattern that closely mirrors many of the aspects of our best understood addiction, alcoholism. Sexual addiction is a learned set of behaviors and does not fit into the disease model of alcoholism, but the pattern of preoccupation, the continuing of compulsive behaviors in spite of often disastrous consequences, and withdrawal when removed from the "drug," closely mirror the key aspects of other addictions. I care less about the label of sex addiction and more about the methods of understanding addictive behavior that assist us in helping a person whose sexual behavior has become dangerous and out of control.

Here's a thought. If you're scared that looking at pornography might make you feel so good you'll want to do it over and over again, don't look at it, Robb!

Especially since this figure must include a section of society that one usually doesn't consider even to be consumers of porn - women.

Holy crapanoly! It was just a sophomoric stunt, exactly what you would expect from college students and nothing more. A silly little protest. I may be wrong about this but I doubt that any Christian/Atheist was turned into a sex addict by trading their literature…
