Anyone know if people with political comments on tee-shirts have been arrested at any other State of the U. speeches?

Shehan was arrested for her t-shirt. (2K+ dead, etc)

Congresman Young's wife was "removed" for her t-shirt (support the troops).

If a protest t-shirt gets you arrested, how come a counter-protest t-shirt only gets you "removed"?

Seems fishy to me.

Dude did allude:

I support the messages of both shirts. I choose to see them as different ways of saying essentially the same thing. The favoritism of the Capitol Police is just another shameless example of unequal treatment and abuse of power, though. (And why Bush didn't long ago sit down and have a long private chat with Cindy Sheehan still has me scratching my head. Seems to me he owes this poor woman at least that much for her son's death in the war he got us into. I don't have to agree with Sheehan in every particular in order to see that her passion is genuine and worthy of more respect than Bush has given her.)

Congressman Young's wife actually showed some spunk herself in a brief CNN interview. She indicated she'd told the Capitol Police to go ahead and arrest her, as she wasn't going to voluntarily take off a T-shirt that supported the soldiers in Iraq who were even now being killed and wounded in service to their country. She still looked pissed.

The irony was that Bush opened his speech in praise of the civil rights achievements of the late Coretta Scott King, while Cindy Sheehan was being arrested.

Diversity, independence, innovation and imagination are progressive concepts ultimately alien to the conservative mind.

The State of the Union Is "Why Fuckin' Bother?":
quote:
The State of the Union Is "Why Fuckin' Bother?":
George W. Bush's State of the Union speech was bad news for budding Dr. Moreau's out there. Every "major" speech by Bush has at least one "What the fuck did he just say?" moment, and last night had its share. But the one that has garnered the most reaction was this line, "Tonight I ask you to pass legislation to prohibit the most egregious abuses of medical research – human cloning in all its forms … creating or implanting embryos for experiments … creating human-animal hybrids." Yes, Dr. Moreau, the President will force you to an uncharted island to create your unholy lemurmen and pantherwomen.

But, then again, the entire speech was bad news for brown people everywhere. Brown people, for Bush, are either diseased or servants. For instance, both mentions of AIDS were about brown people: "We show compassion abroad because Americans believe in the God-given dignity and worth of a villager with HIV/AIDS" and "More than a million Americans live with HIV, and half of all AIDS cases occur among African-Americans...We will also lead a nationwide effort, working closely with African-American churches and faith-based groups, to deliver rapid HIV tests to millions..." When Bush said he wanted to "end the stigma of AIDS," the Rude Pundit guesses that means Bush wants to change it from a "fag disease" to a "nigger disease."

And the niggering continued with Bush's proposals about "illegal immigration," which doesn't mean poor Russian models who can't get a green card, but is code for "brown people who no speakee the English." Bush proclaimed the need for the beneficent enslavement of the brown people: "[W]e must have a rational, humane guest worker program that rejects amnesty … allows temporary jobs for people who seek them legally," or, in other words, "All that hirin' Paco and Pacette you big ass agribusinesses and other companies been doin' fer years, payin' them shit wages, no benefits, and threats to send 'em home if they bitch? Let's make it legal."

A snip from the speech:
quote:
A hopeful society has institutions of science and medicine that do not cut
ethical corners, and that recognize the matchless value of every life.
Tonight I ask you to pass legislation to prohibit the most egregious
abuses of medical research – human cloning in all its forms … creating or
implanting embryos for experiments … creating human-animal hybrids … and
buying, selling, or patenting human embryos. Human life is a gift from
our Creator – and that gift should never be discarded, devalued, or put up
for sale

Human cloning is now an "egregious abuse of medical research"?

This guy, and his fundie funders, are seriously making an attempt to eliminate all possibility of embryonic stem cell research.

To eliminate the chance to study human disease models in live animals (for example, the mice recently engineered with some human brain cells).

The only part of that I agree with is preventing the patenting (or commerce in) of human embryos. No patents should be awarded on human genes either.

So cloning a human skin cell is out? Or a liver cell? Or a toenail cell?

Only the fundie right believe in absolutes.

Dude did conclude re: the Rude:

The guy's definitely got a memorable way with dirty words, doesn't he? And the ideas behind them are not half bad, either.

So many things to comment on. According to Ed Schultz, Air America, the request for the Line Item Veto, which sounded like it was thrown in randomly anyway, was actually ruled unconstitutional long ago. It seems Congress cannot change the balance of powers without a Constitutional amendment. Apparently Georgie's legal advisers got that one wrong too.

Legal advisors? I didn't know that this totolatarian, little Jesus-freak had legal advisors. Welladay.....

Then it must be that he's too arrogant or stupid, or both, to listen to them, as the law of the land in the form of the Constitution of the United States obviously means nothing to him.

Sure he has legal advisors. He just doesn't LISTEN to them.

We all knew this of course, but here is is anyway:
quote:
Administration backs off Bush's vow to reduce Mideast oil imports
By Kevin G. HallKnight Ridder Newspapers

WASHINGTON - One day after President Bush vowed to reduce America's dependence on Middle East oil by cutting imports from there 75 percent by 2025, his energy secretary and national economic adviser said Wednesday that the president didn't mean it literally.
What the president meant, they said in a conference call with reporters, was that alternative fuels could displace an amount of oil imports equivalent to most of what America is expected to import from the Middle East in 2025.

But America still would import oil from the Middle East, because that's where the greatest oil supplies are.

The president's State of the Union reference to Mideast oil made headlines nationwide Wednesday because of his assertion that "America is addicted to oil" and his call to "break this addiction."
Bush vowed to fund research into better batteries for hybrid vehicles and more production of the alternative fuel ethanol, setting a lofty goal of replacing "more than 75 percent of our oil imports from the Middle East by 2025."

He pledged to "move beyond a petroleum-based economy and make our dependence on Middle Eastern oil a thing of the past."
Not exactly, though, it turns out.

"This was purely an example," Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman said.

Anybody who believes anything this chimpanzee hybrid says needs to inquire about a brain transplant; the use-by date on his/her current one has expired.

The dems gave that power to old Ronny... and it was overruled sometime during Clinton's admin.

I forget what the argument against it was... prob find something about it on a google search later though.
