What's sad is that you are missing an opportunity to discuss a subject dear to you Gorgo. What could be interesting is if people would submit postings such as Skeptigal's for article consideration. What could be better than a well-supported argument? It reminds me of the old John Stossel discussions here. I think this is a great topic that deserves discussion more than it does being dragged behind Gorgo's pickup truck down memory lane.

| There is little to add to the opening post. The corporate media are slanted because they are the corporate media. What is the solution? I don't know. Some say government media is a better idea. Maybe it would be better to suggest a solution than to add useless posts. |

Welcome back, @tomic. Most seriously, I don't know. Some say the BBC does better than U.S. media. Or so I've heard. I have no way to know. Schools are technically part of "the media," and most of them are run by the government, and are certainly very biased.
Some say the problem is capitalism itself. As long as profit is the bottom line, that will be more important than information that helps most people. Whatever that means.
I just know that most folks think that Jesus is in heaven, that a large percentage of the folks in the U.S. think that the world is 6,000 years old and being attacked by Satan. They think that the only time the U.S. has ever attacked anyone that hasn't attacked them was Iraq. They think that the U.S. only takes part in humanitarian interventions.
Not all of that was directed by three people in a room, but people do get together in rooms to decide what people should believe about a lot of subjects, and very often they succeed with just enough of a narrow range of disagreement to make it seem as though we have an antagonistic press, and free and open discourse about every subject, without actually solving some very important problems.
That is not because all people care about is American Idol and the worship of celebrities and the Super Bowl and swallowing State Department and corporate handouts whole. When that's the only diet you're fed, you start to think you're being nourished. |

Your first post to this thread was largely about your persecution here on the SFN by the anti-Chomsky crowd, rather than being at all relevant to what beskeptigal posted, and your response to me earlier today was about how you're still being insulted and misunderstood. My post was not about me, it was about the audience that has bought into mainstream media crap and their inability to understand certain concepts. Their inability to read what is written on the page because of their preconceived notions and emotional attachments to the way they think things are, rather than the way that they are.
My problem is not with "anti-Chomsky." Talk to me about the dumb things he did or said, but don't tell me about how he's a supporter of Pol Pot or a Holocaust denier or an "America-hater." |

That's why I did not say you had a problem with critics of Chomsky, and instead that you've got a problem with people who are anti-Chomsky. And that makes you anti-anti-Chomsky, which does not imply pro-Chomsky at all. If people are fabricating wholesale lies about him, then I'm anti-anti-Chomsky also, but nobody around here, in the last couple of years (that I remember) has called Chomsky "a supporter of Pol Pot or a Holocaust denier or an America-hater." And even if they were, how is it relevant to beskeptigal's post, except through your dredging up of an ancient SFN thread in which you were inappropriately vilified, and your thankfully unmet expectation that beskeptigal should meet the same fate? |
