What matters: what Jane thinks about sex and what motivated Bob to ask for sex as payment knowing that a) there are other things that can be used as payment; b) Jane clearly was uncomfortable having sex with Bob as payment.
Damn, I hate spectulations. I refuse to get caught up in it. You can't know what they thought or what other alturnitives there were, all you know is what you are told. Bob is not dishoneralble, for asking a question. And to get his answer.

Tried to post this last night but kept getting a 'no response' message, couldn't get on the site. Computers, huh!! But this is what I would have said:
Thanks. It's an ulcer and hell if I'm going to take another test to see if it's gone. So I just have to keep taking the meds to relieve the symptoms. No sleep, well that explains a lot, haha. I hardly ever get more then 4 hrs. a night, now we understand each other! Now, GO TO BED! Already.

I was deliberately trying not to speculate! The conditions that I mentioned are clearly discernible from the text of the exercise and are directly related to Bob's honor.

Thanks Snake. I hope the symptoms let up soon.
PhDreamer: I'm not sure I see how Bob's actions are dishonorable. He asked for sex as a bartering commodity (oh great, now I sound like Adam Smith), nothing more, nothing less.
She declined the first time. He respected that. She comes back, agrees, and he fulfilled his end of the deal.
You know, after a nap, Jane's behavior seems even more bizzare. She goes directly to John and confesses. I like this "Hi honey, sorry I'm late, had to sleep with the ferryman in order to get here"

I just don't think Bob's honor obligation stops with his "my way or the highway" negotiations. Although it is an assumption, I think it is reasonable to think that Bob knew Jane's reason for wanting to cross and made no attempt to respect her principles. And respect for another is the primary definition of honor. I really don't understand why you guys think Bob is operating in a moral vacuum here.

I think it would be safe to assume that Bob doesn't ask everyone for sex if they want to cross the water. Isn't Bob being unfair by asking different payments from different people?

You never know. Bob could be buttering his bread on both sides.

You need to be posting this in the Capitalist folder, . Haven't you ever heard of having a sale or an auction? The owner of a business can charge what he wants.
Everyone said it couldn't be done. So no one tried. Execpt one old man who lived in a cave on the other side of the world. He hadn't heard it couldn't be done. So he tried. He couldn't do it either. If you succeed, you sell, if you 'fail' you learn |
