From a personal communication:
Being a modest man, when I checked into my motel, I asked the lady at the desk: "I hope the porn channel in my room is disabled."

"No," she said, "it's regular porn, you sick bastard."

Biology is just physics that has begun to smell bad.” —HalfMooner

Ha!

Yeah. And Deepak looked like he didn't get the joke. The clergyman next to him definitely got it, but he was the only one on-stage who was laughing.

A commenter on YouTube says,
This was a total ambush. A red herring of worst order. Mr Chopra was remarking on 'religious belief' and this clown made it an issue of ALL belief.#65279;
Is there a big difference, or just one of semantics?

Ah, this clip is taken from ABC's Nightline Face-Off. Unfortunately, linking directly to any of the clips seems impossible, so you'll need to scroll down that page to the episode where the question was "Does Satan Exist?" They do have a big write-up on it, though. The show originally aired in March, 2009, so it's a little old.

The woman is Annie Lobert, founder of "Hookers for Jesus." She was on the "Yes" side (that Satan exists) along with pastor Mark Driscoll. Deepak's partner on the "No" side (the laughing clergyman) was Bishop Carlton Pearson.

After reading ABC's article about the debate, it seems the joke is on me. Chopra, it turns out, said this:
"All I have to say is belief is a cover-up for insecurity," Chopra said. "If something is real, you don't have to believe in it. You should be able to experience it. And the most fervent believers in the world are the cause of all the problems in the world right now, OK?"

"Unfortunately there are religious institutions that have actually idealized guilt and shame and made it into a virtue," Chopra went on. "They have created institutions around guilt and sin and shame and disgust with our own self. And when we obsess over these things and we collectively create this obsession then we project it out there as this mythical figure that we call Satan."
I nearly agree with him. And so the guy asking the question was clearly rejecting this fairly reasonable (for Chopra) position.

I keep saying that context is important. And so is getting all this egg off my face.

Meh... It was a clever thing to do. Even if the guy was on the wrong side of the argument.

Chicago's got some messed-up weather if it was snowing in June.

Edited to add that Matthew Broderick must have been freezing. And Zachary's got to be in his mid-40s now?

Yes. It all seems so unlikely, doesn't it?

Find someone who has never seen the movie Alien before, and get her to re-enact the chestburster scene.

Honest reactions are a laugh riot.

From Dispatches from the Culture Wars:
A unionized public employee, a member of the Tea Party, and a CEO are sitting at a table. In the middle of the table is a plate with a dozen cookies on it. The CEO reaches across and takes 11 cookies, looks at the tea partier and says, "Watch out for that union guy, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Ha! And hey. Have you ever seen a photo or even a painting of Jesus from any contemporary of his?
