I've never seen PZ Myers actually blow a gasket, but here it is.

Though I have to admit, she brought it on herself. She's complaining about basic science research and saying that they don't do any real public good. How can she know? You never know when knowledge of biology may come in useful. Only the really fucking ignorant would just assume that nothing good would ever come of biology (or any science) research like that.

Of course, this is Palin talking...

Anyhow, here's Myer's blow-up.

This idiot woman, this blind, shortsighted ignoramus, this pretentious clod, mocks basic research and the international research community. You damn well better believe that there is research going on in animal models #8212; what does she expect, that scientists should mutagenize human mothers and chop up baby brains for this work? #8212; and countries like France and Germany and England and Canada and China and India and others are all respected participants in these efforts.

Gov. Palin, "Nanookie of the North" , is a shallow idiot foisted upon us through the blackmail of McCain by the anti-science imbeciles of the religious right. She is incapable of fathoming anything more complex than holy-rolling at a tent revival or ripping off political pork. But we're stuck with her until this election's over and hopefully not afterward.

Good on PZ!

Unfortunately, I fear that this is a view that most American citizens take. They don't see how fields of science are intertwined, how it is impossible to separate economic science from the noneconomic.

What is ironic is that many scientists test on fruit flies because they are economical to test on. Palin is arguing for reduced budgets for scientific research in the same breath that she criticizes scientists for doing so.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

She was ripping on fruit-fly genetic research... without knowing that some promising research on one of her pet causes (autism) was carried out on fruit flys.

Eight years ago I couldn't imagine the possibility of a president more stupid than Bush. Now its a terrifying possibility.

I'm donating more to Obama this afternoon... and maybe to state dems as well.

Looks like Dude beat me to it about the autism research benefits.

People need to realize that it's basic science research that leads to the making of the tools that help people.
