I Love a good quote.

Maybe this is a good idea maybe not. I'm assuming we all have some favorite quotes. Many of us put them right in our signature.

Here is a sampling of some of my favorites (in addition to the ones in my sig); feel free to post yours.

FAITH: Belief without evidence in what is told by one who speaks without knowledge, of things without parallel. - Ambrose Bierce
RELIGION: A daughter of Hope and Fear, explaining to Ignorance the nature of the Unknowable. - Ambrose Bierce

"All thinking men are atheists." - Ernest Hemingway

"Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities." — Voltaire

de omnibus dubitandum - "be suspicious of everything, doubt everything"

“I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.” – Stephen Robert

"Our ignorance is God; what we know is science." - Robert Green Ingersoll

"The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. Instead of altering their views to fit the facts, they alter the facts to fit their views... which can be very uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering."    — Dr Who.

"Christmas, the only holiday that is also a federal holiday so that Christians can go to their services and everyone else can have time to reflect on the meaning of separation of Church and State." - Daily Show

I would rather face a cold reality than delude myself with comforting fantasies.

You are free to believe what you want to believe and I am free to ridicule you for it.

Atheism:
The result of an unbiased and rational search for the truth.

Infinitus est numerus stultorum

There's always the ever-popular, and ironic, anti-quote quote:

I always have a quotation for everything – it saves original thinking.
(Dorothy L. Sayers)

And of course, this whole page:
http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Quotations

Ah, the irony of the anti-quote quote!

The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing. ~~ Albert Einstin

"Although the time of death is approaching me, I am not afraid of dying and going to Hell or (what would be considerably worse) going to the popularized version of Heaven. I expect death to be nothingness and, for removing me from all possible fears of death, I am thankful to atheism."

"We must know. We will know." - David Hilbert

This was said in relation to Hilbert's program, which was to formalize and prove the consistency of mathematics (i.e. prove there are no contradictions). The very day after Hilbert said this in a speech, Godel gave his proof that Hilbert's program was impossible.

Still something to live by, IMO.

"If the end does not justify the means - what can?"
"The only thing worse than a knee-jerk liberal is a knee-pad conservative." - Edward Abby

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.
- Isaac Asimov

Okay, here's one that could easily apply today instead of 125 years ago:

Only a few years ago there was no person too ignorant to successfully answer Charles Darwin; and the more ignorant he was the more cheerfully he undertook the task.
-- Robert Green Ingersoll, "Orthodoxy" (1884)

Death? Why this fuss about death? Use your imagination, try to visualize a world without death! ... Death is the essential condition of life, not an evil.
