I've always been the kind of person who's asking questions and wants to know how stuff works.
I did get drunk on Christian Kool-aid in the Swedish Pentecostal church from around age 14 up until I was 25.
I never lost respect for science during that time, and I suppose that could have been part of the reason I never felt fully accepted in the church.
Now, I've been a recovering Pentecostal and practicing skeptic the last 15 yeas. I said a definitive bye-bye to religion in -94 just before I moveed to my new town where I got a job and what later turned out to be my wife.

I'm now 40yrs old.

Been a skeptic all my life. I always questioned authority (literally) to the chagrin of my parents and most of my teachers....and priests. I didn't like most of the answers I got.

To this day I never say "because I said so" to my kids. They get a reason for my actions. I have also told my children if they can present a reasonable argument or show through logic where I am being unreasonable I will change my mind. My son has already successfully done this on more than one occasion and he did end up getting his way (He's 11 now and argued his first win when he was around 8 or 9).

Shook of most of my religious beliefs in high school and finished the job in college.

While I have a Bachelor's in Science I consider myself to be mostly self educated.

Like someone mentioned earlier my skepticism led to atheism. The more I sought the truth the more ridiculous religion appeared.

I'm 42 now and a hard core "new atheist".

On the stupid front:
I have totaled a car (in a lake no less), a snowmobile (at 70mph), a motorcycle (at 45mph) and hit a boat with a boat (when I was 14). Lost some teeth on the motorcycle crash but have never broken a bone. But that's just the beginning of stupid....really I'm lucky to still be here.

I would rather face a cold reality than delude myself with comforting fantasies.

You are free to believe what you want to believe and I am free to ridicule you for it.

Atheism:
The result of an unbiased and rational search for the truth.

This contains lots of statistics on atheism, I didn't check the resources, but they are posted and seemed legitimate.

Wiki... don't know if its accurate.

My family took me to church every Sunday morning up until probably age 12. I asked a lot of questions, they didn't really have any answers and seemed annoyed that I didn't relent when they told me the answers they thought they had. Plus, the Bible stories always seemed silly, so I quit going. I didn't really know what I thought for a few years until I sort of reassessed and became a skeptical, but weak atheist. Now I'm 23, have a BS in math, and am in grad school (more math).

But we should be careful in drawing causal conclusions from these correlations that apparently exist.

You're right. But I suspect there will eventually be clearer statistics, and more studies of the dynamics in play. It seems pretty clear that Europe has become largely faithless, and that the same process seems to have begun in the USA.

I could have written that myself. In fact, at first I thought I did.

What school are you at now?

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.
