Ever since the '06 election, and indeed a bit before, the religious right has fallen into something of disarray. Their hopes of continuing Republican dominance in Congress, their hidden source of power, faded and with the election of Obama, were dashed upon the reefs of stone-cold reality. Add to this a declining church attendance and a few news outlets finding the courage to criticize their leaders, they did the only thing they could think of and went apeshit, to the sublime delight of the godless, especially me.

Friends, it ain't gonna last.
Populist right-wing rage & the Christian Right

Over at Huffington Post, Chip Berlet looks back at some examples of the sort of ideas that have been coming from the Christian Right for more than 30 years, and which are helping fuel today's virulently anti-Obama right-wing populism.

From the article:

Listening to the rhetoric and reading the placards at recent right-wing events has led many progressive observers to conclude that "these folks are nuts!" Well, they are no more crazy or ignorant than most Americans (stifle that giggle), but they do live inside a bubble.
.....
These folks are no more crazy or ignorant than we are, but their "fact" base is produced in a parallel political universe.
.....
These are not marginal or "fringe" figures. They have played a major role in Republican Party politics and governance for over 30 years. Dismiss them at our own risk.
They will regroup. Charismatic speakers with new if not improved messages will appear, and people, ever seeking a savior, however flawed that savior might be, will listen. It must be remembered that the fundie Christian's ultimate ambition is the same as fundie Islam's: a theocracy where their version of some mad god or other's word is the law. And, as stated in the article, they are not stupid.
