My school only provides online access to the Concise Oxford English Dictionary, I will have to actually make a trip to the library to check out the full one. Anyway, the concise version has exactly one entry

1. atheism n.
disbelief in the existence of a god or gods.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

To my mind, "disbelief" seems to sort of broadly split the difference between not accepting due to lack of (sufficient) evidence, and a firm conclusion that there can be no gods. I like it, as it covers the spectrum of atheism.

Ricky.....

1. atheism n.
disbelief in the existence of a god or gods.

An excellent definition, Ricky! It not only bypasses a lot of the philosophical sophistry involved in "definition of an atheist - strong, weak, wimpy, Herculean, etc.", but also neatly sews in the definition of agnostic who disbelieves until he has a reason to believe. Elegant wording!

I'm disappointed that Veritas 48 hasn't come here to justify his position. Alas. Perhaps he only works through YouTube.

You're too impatient. He might not have read the invitation yet.
