It's probably way to early to know much with any certainty, but it may be that Pentagon shooter John Patrick Bedell was a crazed 9-11 "Truther."

It is beginning to appear that Bedell drove across country from his hometown of Hollister, California to the Pentagon, with two automatic pistols and many clips of ammo, driven by paranoid 9-11 beliefs. There he opened fire on armed guards, wounding two of them and dying in the return fire.

Perhaps he pictured in his head a video-game-style adventure, shooting his way through hallways, rooms, challenges and bosses. Hmmm.

It said semi-automatic (only saying this because the weapon could be legal in that case, if it matters)

Yeah, sorry. I sometime unconsciously succumb to the common bad practice of calling such pistols "automatic" even though that really means a weapon that keeps rapidly firing as long as the trigger is depressed and there is ammo left. I meant "semi-automatic." You have to squeeze the trigger once for each shot with a semi-auto pistol.

I wasn't even considering the legality of the weapons. The action of the shooter made that moot in my way of thinking.

Suicide by cop is usually spectacular. In this case, if Bedell had known how to shoot, there might have been some real carnage.

His lackadaisical trip across country tells me that he was making up his mind; building up for his grand finale.

As for his pistols, I don't like auto-loaders. All too often, you can't get the second shot off due to jamming caused by a bent or dirty magazine. Of course, as 'mooner has noted, the point is now moot.

In probably 5000 rounds out of my Glock I have never once had it jam. Same thing for my Sig. There are relaible semi-auto pistols out there filthy!

As for this guy, I think he left some insane truther screed/manifesto up on the web.

The wiki entry has some basic info.

I've had the same experience with my KelTech P-11. Many hundreds of rounds fired at ranges, but not one misfire or jam. Having not fired it or regularly maintained it for a few years, I'm not certain the same would happen now, but previously that pistol could be counted upon to perform with total reliability.

I've seen jams happen too many times on the range, both in matches and just target practice. And the WW-II and Korean vets can tell horror stories about the 1911-A .45, incidentally, one of the few semis I like. Probably because I've had so much experience with it.

When it comes down to dirty, though, I'll pick the wheel gun and a couple of speed loaders every time.

You best pack a bunch of those museum pieces, then.

If you don't make a habit of missing, one will get it done.

Who knew so many skeptic friends were into shooting? I usually stick with my pea shooter 22 pistol =)

If you're set upon by seven, you're most likely to be SOL anyway. Unless, of course, they lose their nerve when things get noisy and bodies start falling.

I like .22s. Which one do you have?

I won a lot of pistol matches with a Ruger MK 1 bullbarrel, another semi-auto I learned to like.

It's an old Colt Woodsman series 2, my favorite pistol, but I shoot some other relatively lightweight things belonging to friends/relatives (Glock 40, 22 rifle, 223 rifle). I'm not so good with much recoil.

I have a Ruger Mark III Hunter with the 6 7/8" barrel.

I also have a 5" Springfield Loaded Target 1911 .45 and a 4.25" Fusion Commander 1911 (Bobtailed) .45.

I love the 1911's. Fits my mitt and the triggers are unmatched by anything....except maybe a S&W revolver that has already been cocked.

I'm a somewhat lazy part time competitive pistol shooter and currently qualified as a "sharp shooter" by the NRA for outdoor conventional pistol.
