The Vatican indulges in a little outright bullshit.
The Vatican preacher said Friday that criticism of the Roman Catholic Church over paedophilia scandals was similar to anti-Semitism, citing a letter of solidarity from a "Jewish friend" during a Good Friday observance.

Surely the logical fallacy here has not gone unnoticed....
"The stereotyping, the transfer of personal responsibility and blame to a collective blame reminds me of the most shameful aspects of anti-Semitism," the friend wrote, according to Father Raniero Cantalamessa, the preacher to the Papal Household at the Vatican.

"I have followed with disgust the violent attack... against the Church (and) the pope," said the letter read out by Cantalamessa during the ceremony at St Peter's Basilica as Pope Benedict XVI looked on.

Who is this "friend" and from what authority does he speak? Does he even exist?
Speaking on the theme of violence, Cantalamessa -- by tradition the only person allowed to preach to the pope -- said he would not refer to that "inflicted on children, with which a consequential number of clergy have been tarnished (because) it is being discussed enough elsewhere."

The child abuse scandal has engulfed much of Europe and the United States, prompting harsh criticism of the Vatican's handling of the scourge.

Indeed it's being discussed. It seems that a fair number of priests consider their parishes to be their private, kiddie bordellos and their overseeing Bishops are all for it. Perhaps due to happy memories of the times when they themselves were priests? Hmm?
"It is clear to all that (the pope) is above reproach," Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, former archbishop of Milan in Italy, told the Catholic monthly 30 Giorni, praising the pontiff's "sense of duty and his wish to do good."

Yeah, right.

And now, it seems that France has at last begun to recognize the same activity:
France has become the latest European country to implicate paedophile priests.

A lawyer for Father Jacques Gaimard, director of a Christian radio station in northern France, said he had admitted sexually assaulting a boy in the early 1990s and saw his arrest as a "deliverance" after years of private torment. Related article: French priest admits child abuse

In another case, a parish priest near the French city of Rouen, Father Philippe Richir, is suspected of possessing paedophile pornography.
And so forth. A read of the whole thing is chilling -- there seems to be no end to it, nor to the lofty apologia dribbling from the Vatican's lying lips.

Stay tuned; I'm sure there's more to come. Too much more.....

With thanks to Machi4evelli for his link to the video, I'm watching that documentary on the Borgia Popes.

After he'd blown the Vatican's treasury by living large, Pope Leo X began selling indulgences as a source of money. The idea was that a piece of paper from the Pope could absolve a person's sins and get one into Heaven. These indulgences became immediate best-sellers. Even by Catholic standards, indulgences we indecent. They triggered the monk Martin Luther to begin the Reformation and centuries of Wars of Religion.

But neither Leo X nor his cousin and eventual successor Pope Clement VII took the consequences of their excesses seriously. Luther was routinely excommunicated by Leo. A Papal Bull was published to condemn Luther, but then it was high times and business as usual in the Vatican -- until the sack of Rome and the Vatican in 1627.

Today's Pope seems equally disengaged from reality. I wonder who will sack the Vatican this time?

The level of b.s. spewing out of the Vatican....I wouldn't doubt they'd start quoting this satire piece from The Onion.

"We are all connected; to each other biologically, to the earth chemically, to the rest of the universe atomically."

That is some powerful satire. But it was written in 2002 and did not stop the molestations.

I was incensed when the Pope complained about "petty gossip". Hmmm, so the sodomy of young boys is "petty gossip". Interesting....

Yeah, that "petty gossip" quip coming from the Pope himself was the nastiest thing that's been said so far, in my opinion.

It belittles the real suffering of thousands of victims while slapping them in the face. "Insensitive bastard" doesn't even come close.

Hah. That same trick is tried by Coren, but he got called out on it.

So that "Father" Raniero Cantalamessa says complaining about the rape and torture of thousands of children by men whose supposed duty it is to protect them is "worse than anti-Semitism." And naturally, Michael Coren agrees with his evil, smiling buddy in the black dress.

Coren's being devastated on his own blog, and helping the Church to look even worse. Good. I'm glad he's so clueless.

I think we're seeing a case, like "Baghdad Bob," where the spin control itself is doing further damage. With "defenders" like Cantalamessa and Coren, Pope Ratzi urgently needs to find a spider-hole to hide in.

Again, a cardinal called the sodomy of hundreds (maybe even thousands) of little boys "petty gossip". These jackasses don't understand that they're making things worse by downplaying or trivializing these offenses.

"What the hell is an Aluminum Falcon?"

You're absolutely correct. This atrocious spin control is completely self-defeating. It just makes people angrier. Even total silence would be better for them. At least that might be seen by some as "dignified."

If they're not going to actually stop molesting kids, I really hope they keep up the horrible PR until it dooms them.
