Human Ancestors Hunted by Prehistoric Beasts. What? You mean we haven't been top dog for, like, forever?

Is the fact that we are prey for some bigger and meaner animals even to this day somehow new news to some people?

We have never been "top dawg." The difference between then and now is that most, but not all, of our current predators are harder to see.

I had to just shake my head and chuckle when I read that article. In my opinion anthropocentrism is a disease that stifles thought and inquiry, we should be doing everything we can to stamp it out. I realise that in its most basic sense it has helped us survive, but we no longer need to be slaves to it.

Humans are far and away from top dog status amone animals. That one has to go to the single deadliest (to humans) animal on the planet, and one of the oldest extant animal species (been around for 30million years or so, I think):

Mosquitos

As for overall top dog in the entire biosphere? Well, there are thousands of different species of these suckers, and most of them can trade genetic material between themselves and other species. They have been around for a long long time, they comprise two of the three kingdoms on the tree of life, are found in the oldest known fossils (~3.5billion years):

Bacteria
