What part of "I'm straight" was unclear to you?

Speaking of the problems with the US political system: There is an interesting article by a former congressional staffer criticizing both parties. But he mainly talks about the Republican party's motives, one of which is making their rich donors stay rich or get richer.

He talks about how the Republican party gets people to dislike Congress so much that they won't vote. So the only people voting are the extremists.

I cannot say I fully agree with Mike Lofgren. He gives too much credit to the GOP for their success in plotting the demise of Obama and current policy. The GOP and neoconservatives earlier believed in a America straight out of the 1940's a superpower with no rivals or equals. That was soon shatter when a small band of rebels destroyed the twin towers, symbols of Americas economic might. All the 700 billion spend annually on the military machine could not prevent such a simple attack on the motherland. This aura of invincibility was shattered and replaced with a new sense of vulnerability. The enemy was not even a regular army but a rat a tat band of nomads.

The bigger damage to the American psyche was the misguided attack on Iraq which did not turn out any weapons of mass destruction the stated cause for justifying the invasion. This was another blow to the intelligence capabilities of America. The 10 year drag on the war exposed America as a superpower was unable to exert influence in a war torn country Iraq which was already weakened by 10 years of UN sanctions even at the cost to the US of a trillion dollars and some 130,000 troops.

The GOP are not concerned about domestic issues and would like to see the US as the leader of the free world. But the US is drowning in debt and divided as a country of 300 million. The economic burden both domestic and military spending are not sustainable.

The ship is drowning and only some can be saved, The very rich and the military are what is behind the GOP agenda. Every other social program and entitlement is a drain on the limited resources available. So spending cuts is the only way to guarantee money for the military machine and no taxes to the rich who can provide for a strong military . The rest are expendable.

I love his polite euphemism of "low-information voter" for their uneducated non-critical-thinking base.

Is it a coincident or what? America is set to cut its defense budget following the repealing of don't ask don't tell. At the same time the GOP presidential candidates promise to make America the most power military force in the world and all will repeal the repeal of don't ask don;t tell. In short prevent gays from serving in the military.

Is the love or hate of gays determining US military policy? It was not too long ago the war on terrorist was the focal point.

The US military has retreated from Iraq and will soon retreat from Afghanistan. Surely the few gays serving in the army today are not responsible for this embarrassing defeat. So how will keeping them out of an already badly crippled military and economy make a difference.

Should American foreign policy change? Should America recruit from countries that defeated them? Ron Paul thinks they should get out of the business of securing borders in Afghanistan and other foreign countries and fix Americas own broken borders. Here again should America recruit Mexicans who know something about borders.

Are gays the new face of the US military? They have proven they are tough fighters legislatively at least. They can be used as biological warfare some say. Something as serious as this is surprisingly receiving no attention here at all.
