I imagine many here have heard this story by now.
One of the world's noted atheists says a Rochester Hills country club canceled his speaking engagement after learning about his views.
Richard Dawkins, a scientist from England who is known for his outspoken defense of atheism, planned to speak tonight at the Wyndgate Country Club at a fund-raising dinner for the Michigan branch of the Center for Inquiry -- a group that defends secularism.
But on Thursday, an official with the country club contacted the Center for Inquiry and canceled his appearance after finding out Dawkins is an atheist after watching him on "The O'Reilly Factor" on the Fox News channel, said Dawkins and center officials. |
The Center for Inquiry put up info about it too.
| Although privately owned, The Wyndgate facilities are open to the public for special events and occasions. According to Title II of the Federal Civil Rights Law of 1964, “open to the public” means “all persons shall be entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, and accommodations of any place of public accommodation, as defined in this section, without discrimination or segregation on the ground of race, color, religion, or national origin.” |
I hope CFI gets someone (ACLU, American Atheists, or someone else who deals with legal cases like these) to help nail the country club's ass for this. It obviously breaks the law. So sick of this kind of shit.

Oooooh, wait, now I get it. You are saying that Dawkins is being whiny in the same way he mocked Rebecca Watson for being whiny. Okay, that's pretty funny. :-)
Although Watson was talking about social decorum, and this is a case of an institution illegally discriminating against atheists. Also, I don't care what Dawkins has done or said. I'm not even a fan of his recent work. I was be upset about ANY atheist group being discriminated again in this way. Or any religious group, or any race, etc. It's illegal and wrong. |

What a very stupid move for Dawkins to even consider being on "The O'Reilly Factor" and or the Fox News channel, fucking ever. What did Dawkins expect from the dishonest journalism that O'Reilly and Fox news put out regularly. Just so he can promote his book. Dawkins was played the fool again, this is not the first time. God, I hope he has learned something this time. Of all the shows he could have chosen, that was just dumb. So much for Dawkins' common knowledge and common sense.

The problem with Dawkins is he is a evolutionary biologist and not a religious/Biblical scholar. He has the right to claim his atheism. But when he attacks Christianity which he has a very rudimentary knowledge about with his scientific background. He is caught in the same fallacy. Religion cannot disprove evolution no more than evolution can disprove the existence of a god/creator.
Christopher Hitchens does a better job at articulating his atheism based on his understanding and criticism of institutionalized religion and Hitchens does not need or use science to prove the intangibles in Christianity. He provides a better case for secular atheism. |
