| I agree with you Starman. I fail to see why Sydneys opera house, the Eiffel tower and the statue of liberty should be considered to be more "wonderous" than Taipei 101 or the Sears tower. They're just modern buildings with a bit of artistic flair. In this list, there are two I would like to see - Machu Pichu and the Great wall. Saying that, I'm not hugely into buildings, preferring to rest my eyes upon places of natural beauty. In fact, my top 7 list of wonders would all be "natural" (creationists can still claim that these are designed, I suppose), such as Copper canyon in Mexico or the Galapagos islands. |

| I don't get it. Why, when the Great Pyramid at Giza is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, would the pyramids of Giza even be in the running for a new seven wonders?
I'd look for answers at the website, but it doesn't seem to want to come up for me at the moment.

| I think the Statue of Liberty should be on the list if only because the story of how it came about is so bizarre and because I think it's more unlikely for a nonfunctional statue that large to be built than a grandiose building which also has a practical function. |

It is the list that is new, the wonders can still be old.

| Then there is "Rodina Mat' Zovyot", the enormous Soviet statue of the "Motherland" in Russia, commemorating the Battle of Stalingrad, as well as the "Motherland" monument in Kiev, Ukraine. These are huge monuments. Gaudy? Theatrical? Yes. But also unforgettable if you experience them in real life.

Another one, more serene, is the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto Japan.

Me? I vote for the Effile Tower. (If Audrey Tautou meets me on the observation deck, and we then go to a café for coffee and biscuits.)

| Bah! Mere rubble shoveled up into measured heaps, all of it, and most of it taking up space that could be put to better use. Unworthy of consideration. How 'bout instead:
 Hubble telescope

 Darwin's theory of evolution

 Einstein's theory of relativity

Voyager probe -- no longer in the world, but so what? It's still of it.

 Cassini probe -- same deal.

 The Archeoraptor fossil(s)

 The nylon bug

 A T. rex named Sue

The cave paintings in France (forgotten the name of where they were found
  ).
 The Yellowstone caldera

 The Clovis point

Organ transplants and stem cell research

 Roman aquaducts

 The Magna Carta

The Harley Davidson motorcycle, and so forth.

If the Statue of Liberty is there, then the Christ Redeemer statue must be as well. They have about the same story.

 I second that!
I fail to any wonder greater than that, excepting, perhaps, Deep Blue.

 But my vote falls for:
 1. Great Wall.
 2. Angkor Wat.
 3. Petra.
 4. Timbukto.
 5. Machu Picchu.
 6. Coliseum.
 7. Pyramids.

| Let's add Roy's Rock to the list. There's a piece of architecture that caused a lot of nonsense, and, I have a suspicion, we've yet to hear the last of it.
