Some of those comments to the articles are truly great. It's a pity they aren't Skeptic Friends...

It cannot help his case that whilst arrogantly often claiming an IQ in excess of 160 Hovind also claims that he cannot understand why he is being prosecuted for tax evasion. What IQ does one need to understand this no-brainer? ...

From the second link:

The defense will not present a case.

What does this mean? Or is it, "The defense will now present a case."?

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Probably "not" was correct, though I've been known to make that fatal typo, myself. Defense will probably claim in closing arguments that it was unnecessary to put on a defense, because the prosecution didn't prove its case.

Good luck with that! With a court-provided attorney, you get what you pay for. Hovind will hopefully get his full tax-payment's worth.

Yeah, I saw that. One of the links says the defense will be calling up ten witnesses, so it must be a typo. By the sounds of it, Dr. Dino's ship has sunk already.

edited to add...looks like the second link is an update later today. Maybe so, like you say Halfmooner, that there may be no defense.

I believe it means they will ask for a judgement in their favor relying solely on the theory that the prosecution failed to make it's case. It is up to the prosecution to prove the law was broken. The defense is under no obligation to prove the law was not broken. Innocent until proven guilty and all that stuff.

The foundation of morality is to . . . give up pretending to believe that for which there is no evidence, and repeating unintelligible propositions about things beyond the possibliities of knowledge.

Just took this from The Pandas Thumb:

quote:
This just in from the Pensacola News-Journal:

‘Dr. Dino,' wife guilty

Jury deliberations took about three hours.

A federal jury has convicted Kent Hovind and his wife, Jo, of tax fraud.

Hovind faces a maximum of 288 years in prison. His wife faces up to 225 years. Her charges include aiding and abetting her husband with 44 counts of evading bank-reporting requirements.

And at the end:

Defense lawyers for the Hovinds rested their case on Wednesday without presenting evidence or calling witnesses.

I certainly hope the judge doesn't give the maximum sentence. 200 years in the can each ought to be enough to serve justice.

Maybe they will get to live until they're 800 and, thus, actually be able to serve the full sentence.

Fast catch of the verdict, Hawks! Sounds like the trial was a complete
no-brainer. They'll be in complete denial, of course. Bet judge will throw the book at 'em, law book, that is.
Hovind has earned a hefty sentence with his tax evasion. Tack on a few more years for all his outright lies, deceit about his phony creationism claims, and for his contribution to dumbing down the gulliable.

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
