Hmmmmm. A book about "evidence for and against Darwinism and Intelligent Design." A press release with the dateline Seattle. I wonder if this is related at all to the Discovery Institute?

If so, then we can certainly expect a fair and honest presentation of the data, so the book should be important to, as it says "liberals and conservatives, Christians and non-Christians, educators, policymakers, and scientists."[/sarcasm]

Sounds like they "expose" the common fallacies of evolution and then claim evolution is flawed, looks like BS to me. I know a great deal about evolution and dont find anything wrong with it, except the poor way in which it is taught.

I wonder how the word "Politically" got put in the title. Must have been an editing mistake. They should probably take it out before it gets published.

The front cover just reeks of the same old stuff that anti-evolutionists have been saying for 50+ years.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Cune, take a look at the bottom of the article:

quote:
Discovery Institute will host a book release party for The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design on Thursday, September 7, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Rainier Square Atrium, 1333 Fifth Avenue, Seattle. Copies of Wells' new book will be available at a discounted rate, and the author will be signing books at the event.

Acutally what I meant was ... has anyone heard of this author, who allegedly "...has received two Ph.D.s: one in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of California at Berkeley, and one in Religious Studies from Yale University".

Does having a PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology quailify one to be an expert on evolutionary theory?

Yeah, Wells is a Fellow at the DI and he's a complete loon. Besides being an evolution denier, he denies that the HIV virus causes AIDS. He's also the author of Icons of Evolution, a book that famously mispresents current evolutionary theory.

He's been quoted as saying: "Father's* words, my studies, and my prayers convinced me that I should devote my life to destroying Darwinism, just as many of my fellow Unificationists had already devoted their lives to destroying Marxism."

Expect this new publication to be nothing but more propaganda, only now in easy-to-read comic form! Gee, are there any doubts left about who the DI's target audience is?

* Edited to add: "Father" in this case refers to Rev. Sun Myung Moon who actually bankrolled Wells' education at UC-Berkeley so he could learn how to defeat Darwinian evolution.

Yeh, I'm familiar with this clown. Not only is he big in the Discovery Sanitorium Institute, but he is closely attached to the Rev. Sung Mung Moon and his happy, little hive of drooling zombies. I had a thread on him a little while ago titled, 'Moon over Topeka.' He was involved in the KS school board election, and might still be making an ass of himself there.

It's so frustrating with these ID types because there's nothing in their "theory" to evaluate critically. All they seem to say is "this is too complex" and be done with it. There's nothing testable, and it makes no predictions!

Here's Wikipedia's take on him:

quote:
John Corrigan "Jonathan" Wells is a biologist and Fellow of the Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture. He is a prominent supporter of intelligent design and denies the predominant scientific views of evolution and that the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the sole cause of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). [1]

After graduating from Sun Myung Moon's Unification Theological Seminary in 1978, Wells earned two doctorates - one in theology at Yale University and the other in molecular and cell biology at the University of California at Berkeley. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church funded Wells to gain his science PhD at UC-Berkeley to learn how to defeat Darwinian evolution. [2]

A real scientific superstar, this one is...

Moon sending Wells to UC to get a biology PhD for the express purpose of defeating evolution is like Osama bin Laden sending terrorists to flight schools so they can fly airliners into buildings.

Just to be crystal clear about where all this is coming from, "Evolution News & Views" is the official blog of "The Center for Science & Culture," which began its life as part of the Discovery Institute as "The Center for the Renewal of Science & Culture."

Exactly. Moreover, they've cleverly couched the site as one that reports on evolution-- much like NASA has websites that detail its research. An ill-informed individual could easily miss that the whole thing is a scam designed to lessen the credibility of evolution and-- of course-- provide an "alternative" view...

Hmmm, I wonder how well they would take to party crashers? Or maybe I will just show up to see who all shows.

Yah, I should have noted that. I found this in my Google news, which I have setup to alert about evolution new items.

Thanks all for the background on this fellow!
