It's pretty bad when "Active Topics" shows the same four threads for "Last Two Days" as it does for "Last Four Hours."

John, I would suggest living with the loss and going on as if it weren't going to happen again.

Okay, per my searches, everything between 07/07/2007 at 05:25:15 and 07/09/2007 at 11:17:00 was lost (server times, Central). That's two days, five hours, 51 minutes and 45 seconds.

I suspect that the site was completely unavailable for at least the last five hours of that stretch of time, but still it seems like a lot. I was under the impression that daily backups are pretty much the norm. In other words, I would have thought that there'd have been another backup at 05:25:15 on July 8th.

A note to our members:

Just so's ya know, we have been online for a very long time, world wide web wise, and nothing like this has ever happened to us before. Loosing posts is not a regular thing at SFN. And this server has been by far the most reliable that we have had.

I guess we'll all have to chalk it up to “shit happens” and just carry on.

Thanks!

Kil

Anyone who wants to know the real truth behind this can read about it here:

http://www.skepticfriends.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=8226

What a man believes upon grossly insufficient evidence is an index into his desires -- desires of which he himself is often unconscious. If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way. - Bertrand Russell

Yes, keep in mind that part of the 2 days was offline time, meaning there were no posts at all.

As far as I know, there is no backup to restore from so what you see is what we have. But we are talking about something like one day's lost posts and a Sunday in July fortunately.

Two days, but...

Over the previous four weekends, we'd seen between 690 and 860 visitors per day.

On the 7th (log snagged before the crash), we had 595 visitors.

On the 8th (log grabbed just minutes ago), we had 521 visitors.

Our average over the last 31 days (including those two) has been 789, so this past weekend represented a serious slump in readership.

That's why they moved the servers during this time period. History has shown it to be a very slow time in terms of web traffic. Google used this time to slide some changes through as well.

Well, we hardly have a trend going here. Yes, in 2006 there was a slump during the week that included July 4th, but in 2005, we had 120 more visitors during the week starting July 2nd than we had the week before, and the week after we had another 79. 2005 was a very upwardly-trending Summer for us, without many large slumps.

It's not just us. CrystalTech is certainly looking at traffic for all its domains. They have been tracking the data a long, long time.
