My daughter has sent me a copy of the photo she took with her phone camera of PZ Myers and myself at his lecture a few weeks ago at Berkeley:

My new pal, Christopher Hitchens. And me. Photos by my daughter, who accompanied me to Hitch's talk.

This is one of the best photos I've seen of Hitchens,
though he was recovering from a recent spider bite.

Can't you tell we're tight?

Cool pictures!!! Nice sweatshirt mooner. I have em with these guys too. My favorite is this one. In fact, it's my all time favorite picture from any TAM event I have been to.

I envy you for that one, Kil! You're a much more successful fanboy than I.

Peter Graves has seen his last gladiator movie. (HT: The Daily What)

And Corey Haim has battled his last vampire, which I learned from NPR and Very Demotivational:

I'll miss Peter Graves. No, come to think of it, I can always watch his works, as they, at least, are essentially immortal.

That's pretty cold about Haim being with his career now. Funny, too.

Uh-oh, I've got the firehose ready.

"We are all connected; to each other biologically, to the earth chemically, to the rest of the universe atomically."

"So you're made of detritus [from exploded stars]. Get over it. Or better yet, celebrate it. After all, what nobler thought can one cherish than that the universe lives within us all?"

It appears that the Weekly World News has noted Kil's return road trip from Washington State to Southern California:

David and Barbara Mikkelson (of Snopes.com fame) got a nice little write-up in The New York Times.

Edited to add a Hat Tip to The Daily What.

Today, while reading Daniel L. Everett's Don't Sleep, There Are Snakes, I ran across Everett's assertion that Einstein had once made an odd comment about rivers.

As most people realize, the distance between two points on a river differ greatly depending upon whether a straight-line ("as the crow flies") distance is measured, or whether the distance is measured by how far one must navigate (through all the bends) by boat.

But is there a fairly consistent ratio between the two measurements?

It seems that old rivers have a maximum ratio of navigated distance to straight-line distance of about pi:1. With newer rivers, the ratio is closer to 3:1. And it does seem that Einstein was involved in this speculation.

There's not a lot of difference between 3.0 and 3.14, is there? I guess I'm surprised that new-vs-old doesn't differ more.

Cool that. No one-trick-pony was old Al.
