I wrote to Filthy yesterday to see how he's doing. I also exchanged a couple of posts with Mooner on FB.

Today (Sept 9) marks the 66th anniversary of the first actual bug found in a computer:

USN Rear Admiral Grace Hopper popularized the term. From Wikipedia:
Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906 – January 1, 1992) was an American computer scientist and United States Navy Rear Admiral. A pioneer in the field, she was one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer, and developed the first compiler for a computer programming language. She conceptualized the idea of machine-independent programming languages, which led to the development of COBOL, one of the first modern programming languages. She is credited with popularizing the term "debugging" for fixing computer glitches (motivated by an actual moth removed from the computer).
Quite an amazing person.

Pretty remarkable. Actually fixed the bug while preserving the bug.

I thought I'd share this. Perhaps it will help someone who needs it by suggesting more of the same.

This just warms a humanists heart. As Bob Dylan sang "The Times They are a-Changin".

Today in awesome parenting news: A father, who learned that his daughter disowned his grandson because he was gay, responded in the most amazing way.

Dear Christine,

Im disappointed in you as a daughter. Youre correct that we have a shame in the family, but mistaken about what it is. Kicking Chad out of your home simply because he told you he was gay is the real abomination here. A parent disowning her child is what goes against nature. The only intelligent thing I heard you saying in all this was that you didnt raise your son to be gay." Of course you didnt. He was born this way and didnt choose it any more than he being left-handed. You however, have made a choice of being hurtful, narrow-minded and backward. So, while we are in the business of disowning our children, I think Ill take this moment to say goodbye to you. I now have a fabulous (as the gays put it) grandson to raise, and I dont have time for heart-less B-word of a daughter. If you find your heart, give us a call. Dad.

Good for doing what's Right,
Good for what Moral.
Good for this father.

In your face! To those who need to follow any immoral imaginary made up God who would have you disown or worse, kill your own child, like He did, because that's just the way God rolls. You can't explain God's ways but you accept Him for what He is. Shame on you and this boy mother.

If you're a fan of the movie Alien, you'll love this Interview with Bolaji Badejo, 1979. In the comments, someone nicely left a link to this video.

Hey, Bloom County fans! I just recently learned that before that strip, Berke Breathed wrote a strip called The Academia Waltz for The University of Texas at Austin's newspaper, for about a year. It included Steve Dallas and Cutter John, though he was known as Saigon John back then.

The link should take you to the very first strip. (GoComics also hosts Bloom County.)

Yesterday, the postman delivered a present from Santa.

He said somehow Santa had misplaced it so it wasn't delivered in the usual route, but sent it through the postal service instead. (Claiming sleigh only had access to warp-speed configuration during Christmas eve and couldn't deliver it in person).

Anyway, I got something new to read after I finish "In Search of Schrödinger's Cat".

I don't think this book is that hard to get a hold on in the era of internet access to both new and used-stores.

However, this book comes with a little extra:

This book is signed: "To Dr. Mabuse

James Randi
Penn Jilette
Brian Dalton (Mr. Deity)
Ben Radford

Santa must think I've been a good boy.
I think Kil may have had something to do with that.
Thank you!

Nice. A TAM memento. Brings back fond a number of memories of when I got my (Randy) signed copy @ TAM 7. Ah! but your Santa worked extra on yours. Very nice indeed.
