Friday's BO is in. Expelled has begun to lose a few theaters, eleven thus far have dropped it. And it's fallen in rank to number 13. Sales for yesterday were considerably less than half of its opening night one week earlier, and even lower than last Sunday. Word of mouth, even among the True Believers, apparently is not kind to this load of crap.

(BTW, my daughter and I saw "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" at a cineplex which also showed Expelled. There was quite a line for "Marshall," which was worth the wait. What a great comedy!)

As the numbers show, Expelled only bumped up 118% in revenue on Friday (from Thursday). The only film which had a worse bump in the top 13 was Street Kings (at 75%), and it's been out a week longer. Even 88 Minutes, which had a pathetic 5% Tomatometer, got a 121% bump.

And thus you understand why I don't bother. If the lyric isn't played to their melody, they don't want to hear it.

I wonder why; it seems to me that dissenting voices make for a more interesting discussion: "Come, let us reason together."

Oh, of course; they know they'd lose that as they've lost with everything else they've tried.

Weird: The Numbers had Friday's take reported by 2 PM Eastern on Saturday, but here it is nearly 8:30 PM on Sunday and still nothing about Saturday's gross. Do these people take a day off or something?!

Weirder: Box Office Mojo estimates that Friday's gross for the film was only $450,000, while The Numbers has it $55,000 higher.

Insanely Bizarre: The producers sent out an email begging people to go see what they state is a "fan favorite," and also claiming that being a box-office failure is the same as being blacklisted.

How ironic. They are experiencing "natural selection" as it were, within a capitalist system (bad documentary = poor financial performance, leads to extinction).

So Ben Stein has said, "Science leads to killing people."

And once again, you just have to let these people talk to get them to shoot themselves in the foot. While a lot of reviewers have said that interviewees in Expelled deny that ID is religious, near the end of the clip I just linked to, Stein is asked to tell an audience why they should see the movie, and Stein says,
Because we'd like them to have a vision of mankind as being something other than specks of mud and specks of dirt, hit by lighting. We'd like them to have a vision of mankind as having a divine origin. We'd like them to have a vision that they and their fellow human beings are in touch with the divine spirit...
All science so far!

First they stick their collective foot in their mouth, then they shoot it!

This is getting almost as good as The Three Stooges, I declare it is.

As of this writing, the $1.379 million figure is still just an estimate from Friday's estimate, and they don't have Saturday's or Sunday's grosses posted at all.

A conservative comments on Expelled:
A Blood Libel on Our Civilization
Can I expell Expelled?

By John Derbyshire

What on earth has happened to Ben Stein? He and I go back a long way. No, I've never met the guy. Back in the 1970s, though, when The American Spectator was in its broadsheet format, I would always turn first to Ben Stein's diary, which appeared in every issue. He was funny and clever and worldly in a way I liked a lot. The very few times I've caught him on-screen, he seems to have had a nice line in deadpan self-deprecation, also something I like. Though I've never met him, I know people who know him, and they all speak well of him. Larry Kudlow, whose opinion is worth a dozen average opinions on any topic, thinks the world of Ben.

So what's going on here with this stupid Expelled movie? No, I haven't seen the dang thing. I've been reading about it steadily for weeks now though, both pro (including the pieces by David Klinghoffer and Dave Berg on National Review Online) and con, and I can't believe it would yield up many surprises on an actual viewing. It's pretty plain that the thing is creationist porn, propaganda for ignorance and obscurantism. How could a guy like this do a thing like that?

Derbyshire rocks!

Well, I can't post, but guess who can?

Look in the comments section.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

I think this is nice too if it makes people feel more comofortable with existance. But why not do that in a church instead of a science class room? That way people won't confuse warm-fuzzy feelings with actual evidence-based knowledge.
