Posted on: 10/28/2006

Near death, Jomanda, trivia, vampires, smarts, daddy and more!

Week ending October 28, 2006 (Vol 3, #42)

Welcome to the Skeptic Summary, a quick week-in-review guide to the Skeptic Friends Network and the rest of the skeptical world.

Special Announcement:
The SFN would like to send Kil back to the Amaz!ing Meeting next January, and you can help!
Forum Highlights:
NDE experiment - You know, NDE experimentation should really be ND, anyway.

Psychic Jomanda/Millecam: the true story - Oh, do tell…

What’s the ultimate trivia question? - I think that’s the answer!

Editor’s Choice: Party-pooping physicist fears no phantoms - The math of the monstrous!

From the Archives: You people think you are sooo smart… - Captain Moonbeam shows how fitting his monicker is.
Kil’s Evil Pick:
Come to daddy? - In the spirit of the season, a festive favorite…
Chat Highlights:
Sunday: Two-faces ink-blob test on chat-smileys; Formula 1 race in Brazil; going to TAM, by plane, train, or automobile? Tattoos; tequila and other liquours; going overboard with puns.

Wednesday: Structure of the Twin Towers started everything off as we discussed some of the most recent topics on the forums. Then the state of US education. Differences in courses over time and space, validity of the SAT, and the irony behind the name, “No Child Left Behind.” Also, the state of special education. A bit of administration talk and Guild Wars scared most away, so chat ended rather quickly.

Come chat with us.

Book of the Week:
Brainless: the Lies and Lunacy of Ann Coulter, by Joe Maguire.

“She is an uncompromising apologist for the right and a hater of all things left. Is there anything she won’t do or say to further her agenda? The answer is no.

Brainless: The Lies and Lunacy of Ann Coulter is an unbridled look at a woman who twists the truth, misleads, plays loose with facts and allusions, and has been accused of plagiarism in hammering home her logic-defying arguments.

Brainless illustrates the dangers, ironies, and hypocrisies of the Mistress of Malice. She spews her venom generously across the spectrum. Democrats and Liberals are just the beginning. If you’re a woman (you shouldn’t vote), gay (you’re going to hell), a 9/11 widow (dancing on your murdered husband’s grave) or Bill Clinton (slurs and charges too numerous to mention here), you will find yourself the object of her ire.

Now it’s time to turn the tables and take a good hard look at the High Priestess of Hypocrisy. Journalist Joe Maguire takes apart her arguments, picks apart her agenda, and gives us a look at the psychology and background of the woman who has reduced public political and cultural debate to browbeating and name-calling.

Diligently researched (with source notes you can verify!), Maguire separates fact from myth and gives us an unvarnished look at the real Ann Coulter.

Let’s face it. You don’t ever want to read a book by Ann Coulter. Read this so you don’t have to!”
